A good start of this post would be to clarify that I am not one of the most avid movie fans. It’s not like I don’t like them – I adore and admire the art of cinematography and I think it is one of the most impactful mediums to convey emotions and display messages. I am just not a movie person unless someone asks me to see one.

With this being said I am re-starting the challenge series I did a while ago where I will be talking on topics that my lovely Instagram followers provided for me – needless to say, those will be rotating with my regular music rambling. I am starting with a challenge by one of the most inspiring and dedicated people I have the pleasure of knowing – Shantnu Dobhal.

How Cinema Changed The Way We See The World

This was the theme of the challenge but since I am not a very competent movie expert and this is quite out of my comfort zone (which is the point of the challenge) I might detract from the exact topic and improvise quite a bit. I hope you don’t mind.

I have to admit I am not really up to date with the movie industry and all the extremely impactful productions which have happened past years (and keep happening nowadays). I do, however, have my own list of movies which I consider (almost) life-changing. And I highly respect the art of cinema since I believe it has a tremendous amount of qualities which make it as powerful as it is.

When it comes to how the cinema changed the way we see the world I think this goes two ways – it changes each individual’s perspective in various ways and it changes the overall trends in society and the masses.

Movies make you see life in another perspective

This one is quite high in my list of masterpieces

One of the most important qualities of movies, in my opinion, is that they can make you more open-minded and help you see life from another angle. This in itself can drastically change the way one sees the world and lead to a completely new lifestyle or mindset.

An example that comes on the top of my mind is the movie Flipped. The Rob Reiner production perfectly illustrates how important it is to view a situation from different angles. It is also a good reminder to put yourself into other people’s shoes and not become trapped between the walls of your own perspective.

Watching a quality film can introduce you to stories and types of people you never thought might exist. The beauty of this is that it makes you more considerate of other people and more curious towards the world. Breaking away from the restrictions of your own little world and your established mindset is in itself a change in the way you view your surroundings.

Raising awareness of important issues

Has the same effect no matter how many times I watch it.

The movie industry has great power. Power which can be used to raise awareness about important topics relevant to modern society.

Be it climate change, mental health, politics, or the overall direction society has started tilting towards cinema is one of the loudest voices when things need to be discussed. Uniting the power of art, metaphors, and illustrative storytelling whether it is a what-if scenario or a representation of recent events the effects cinema has on society are undeniable. The least it does is make us think and in the best case make a positive change. This goes both on a personal and global scale.

The example I can give here is not the best one, but a movie that made me twist my perspective of life and think about my choices was Into The Wild. An indisputable masterpiece the film will without a doubt make you think about your choice and lifestyle boldly condemning materialism and greediness. It’s a must-see.

Learning Lessons

Smart people learn from their mistakes. But the real sharp ones learn from the mistakes of others.

Learning an important lesson can also lead to a change in the way you see the world, cant it?

As I mentioned movies give us the possibility to look into other people’s lives and see a different side of existence. This helps imagine yourself in situations which you have not yet encountered and learn from the lessons depicted in the movie.

Going to be honest here, I don’t know how it is with you but despite being convinced I have learned a lesson from seeing someone make a certain mistake I never avoided it. The only way to learn for me seems to be to experience the lesson myself. But I hope that’s just me.

A good example I want to give here is Collateral Beauty – a stunning and highly impactful movie that definitely makes it to the top of my list as well. There is a lot to learn from it and it is presented in the best possible way.

I know we are talking about movies being game-changers and shifting perspectives but I cannot rest easy if I don’t mention one of the most relevant and popular functions of this art. I do believe it is of extreme importance as well and in one way or another, it is beneficial.

An escape from real life

My top pick when it comes to the fantasy genre – stunning effects and decent storyline

Sometimes the thing you need is to just forget about your everyday struggles and stressful day and ease up with a movie with great effects, filming, and sound. Transporting yourself to another world thanks to a well-executed piece of art is the best way to do it for sure.

The examples here a countless, I personally think fantasy/adventure genres are some of the richest when it comes to movie productions and that’s for a reason. Starting with classics like Indiana Jones, Star Wars, and Harry Potter and going all the way to new productions like Valerian And The City Of Thousand Planets viewers nowadays have such a vast variety of worlds to dive in it can actually be a challenge.

There are many worlds to be discovered and many adventures to be observed and even though you usually start watching with the intention to escape real life and shut off your brain there is a grain of wisdom and something to take away from each and every movie.

As long as you keep your eyes and mind open, of course.

I think this exhaust my limited ability to speak on the topic but I cannot allow myself to end the post without giving you my recommendations of some of the movies which have changed the way I see the world (apart from the ones I already talked about). I would love to hear yours as well so shoot me a message and give me some recommendations. I will try to watch them in the next 5-10 years.

Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind

I just wish I learned the lesson from this one on time

Adding a summary of the movie will only spoil it and I highly recommend you watch it without reading anything about it in advance or see the trailer. It will make it so much better.

This has to be my favorite movie so far and no matter how many times I see it I always cry. Everything about it is pure art, beauty, and relatable situations. Despite having a fantasy aspect the production is extremely close to real life and the story it tells is incredibly touching.

The fantasy elements only enhance the emotions expressed and make the point of the film stronger. Great filming, soundtrack, and flawless acting by Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet amongst other only make it better.

Safety Not Guaranteed

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite actresses and that was the reason I picked up the movie at first but I fell in love with the story and execution to the point where it shifted my perspective on certain situations drastically.

Safety Not Guaranteed has very similar vibes to Eternal Sunshine and it also gracefully unites the relatable real-life situations with fantasy elements to make its message stronger and the development more intense. Another touching story filled with a great amount of comedy and fictional elements united with mesmerizing acting and filming makes up another must-see in my list.

Captain Fantastic

This defines art

This one is right next to Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind in the life-changing movies for me. A pure masterpiece no matter how you look at it the film has extremely thought-provoking topics explored deeply, highly engaging story, stunning acting, and it is very, very relevant to modern times. It will definitely make you think and reconsider your perspective on life.

Spider-Man (2002)

I have a special connection with Spider-Man – I believe he is one of the best developed fictional characters and worthy superheroes.

A perfect example of great writing the story of Peter Parker shaped my childhood and once I got old enough to understand all the real-life references and wisdom packed into the movie and comics it definitely became something which changed the way I see the world.

And yes, Sam Raimi’s adaption is the only one I consider accurate since it presents the character of Peter Parker the way he was originally constructed. Yes, I had to say it.

The Matrix

Now, this takes me waaay back and reminds me I have to rewatch the trilogy again.

The thing about The Matrix is that it has never left my mind ever since the first time I saw it as a little kid. It still makes me think and question things.

The incredible fiction in this movie has reached a level where it makes people doubt reality and go into deep contemplations about life. It is a stunning and well-polished work which has tones of well-working elements.

Honorable Mention – Lords of Dogtown

Lords of Dogtown has a historical value and serves as a perfectly re-told reminder of how a culture emerged and what it had to overcome to shape itself into what it is today.

The movie has stunning filming, noteworthy accuracy, and most importantly serves as a great reminder of what dedication and passion can achieve. It is super inspirational and it personally helped me shape my belief system and mindset for the better.

Don’t miss out on this one.

How has cinema changed the way you see the world?

I think it is quite hard to grasp all the beauty and power of cinema but it is undeniable it will keep shaping the world. Hopefully for the better.
